A press release announcing Atari Vault, gives hope that Atari Inc. still has gaming aspirations

Atari Vault will be 100 classic games, but it seems unclear what versions will be included. Arcade? Home console?
Atari Vault Atari has announced development of a retro gaming compilation titled Atari Vault. It is for PC and being developed by Code Mystics. Their announcement states they will preview this 100-game title at PAX South 2016 and specifically names five games - Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, and Warlords - but says nothing else of the contents.

One desperately wants to believe these will be the arcade versions of these games, but let's not forget that many of their arcade hits were ported to various Atari home consoles and computers right up to the Jaguar. At the same time, gems like Yar's Revenge were created for the 2600 and never had an arcade existence. The same few PR paragraphs are repeated verbatim across many websites, but it isn't clear what will really be on this compendium of 100 games.

When I hear 100 atari games I think of the Atari Flashback - which is simply a licensing agreement for a faux plug-and-play console. While it delivers an Atari gaming experience for those longing for the 8-bit days of the 2600, Atari Vault sounds like it's been polished and updated in a number of ways. And hopefully it contains their arcade titles.

Atari's iconic games are historic, but shouldn't remain in the past!
Foremost in the updates category, of the press release, is local & online multiplayer options. When they've mentioned Warlords as an inclusion, it's good to hear of multiplayer options! Additionally, they mention Steam leader boards and Steam controller support.

As for the upgraded user interface... that could be awesome or mundane. I loved the treatment of the Atari Greatest Hits 1 & 2 on Nintendo's DS. The interface was nicely done and offered some interesting background info and art for each game. As long as it's easy to locate and select titles, I'm not too concerned about the interface. But I hope they've added some extras for the fans.

No, Not THAT Atari

When I hear mention of Atari I get very excited. I have to remind myself that the Atari I grew up with has been bought, sold, divided, and resurrected so many times none of the original company remains. That's most evident in the recent projects from an Asteroids themed MMO, online casino, and a fitness app that didn't really take off.

Most of us believe the value of the "Atari" name lies with it's software titles from the golden age of gaming. Their logo and reputation are largely attached to decades-old classic games. With some of their recent missteps, I'm surprised Atari is not ding more to keep their iconic logo and game library positioned for the next generation of gamers. I'd love to see more soft goods - who can turn down an Atari t-shirt? Hopefully Atari Vault will inspire younger gamers to look back in gamings history as well as delight retro gamers who grew up playing these amazing games in arcades and at home!
