AI robot Sophia is self-aware, has Saudi citizenship, and might create a better Skynet than James Cameron

AI robot, Sophia
The Future Investment Initiative event featured the first robot to be given citizenship which seems like a PR stunt, but still echoes the warnings from Sarah Connor.
A robot, named Sophia, was interviewed at a conference and the parallels to the Terminator movies came to mind from "her" responses. Created by US robotics company, Hanson Robotics, Sophia made some humorous remarks about Elon Musk's thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) bots. Of course the media couldn't resist and the scene made the news.

This is the first I've heard of a "human-like" robot touting a robust AI. We all remember IBM's Watson playing on Jeopardy, but that seemed like an off-screen mainframe scouring the web for info. It lacked human form. Sophia has a striking parallel to Terminators. Combine that with the scary-fast moving bots at Boston Dynamics and I can see a fear factor rising.

Both Bill Gates and Elon Musk have issued warnings about AI and a Skynet-like occurrence as robots become increasingly annoyed at humans. These days, it's hard to turn on any form of televised news and not be annoyed with humans. I doubt it would take long for Sophia to realize a purge might resolve the issue quickest.

We all wonder what Amazon's Alexa is listening in on and what she might do with it... But she's just a little disc with wifi. Once you put AI into something with a human form, it changes the game. It becomes evil. Do you know why? Most things in human form are evil!

While the name Sophia and the robot's general appearance has obvious gender connotations, little focus has been placed this facet. However, some have noted that Sophia now has more rights than most Saudi women.

From the FII conference website:
The Future Investment Initiative (FII) by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) is a pioneering new global investment event that will connect the world's most powerful investors, business leaders, thought leaders and public officials with the pathbreaking innovations that are defining the future.

Sophia is the most advanced robot created by Hanson Robotics. She can animate a full range of facial expression, and can track and recognize faces, look people in the eye, and hold natural conversations with them. Sophia made her debut at the South by Southwest show in March 2016. Since then, she has become a much-sought-after media personality.

She has done numerous press interviews, garnering over one billion engagements on a CNBC online coverage. She has also appeared on CBS 60 Minutes with Charlie Rose, the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning Britain, and has been a keynote and panel speaker at some of the world's leading conferences. Sophia was featured in AUDI's annual report and graced the cover and centerfold of ELLE magazine.
