Our local Wackenhammer's Clockwork arcade switched to a one-price free-play all-day model

There's something magically wonderful about quarters and tokens that swipe-cards don't offer, but what about free-play?
One of the more unusual arcades in my area also has a good sized outdoor carousel whirling kids around and around during the warmer months of Summer. Inside are a variety of vintage, rare, and unusual video games along with several steampunk inspired displays and exhibits. Each year they try to add another vintage video game on the floor. A few years ago Joust appeared. Last year it was Tempest - but it broke very early in the season. This year Asteroids Deluxe makes it's debut. It's a fun place, but not without it's issues.

Wackenhammer's Clockwork Arcade A few years ago, when we first began frequenting Wackenhammer's Clockwork Arcade their machines used a combination of quarters and tokens which led to a lot of confusion - especially among the kids. Coin slots were often jammed.

But growing pains are lessons learned and I'm excited to see how the free-play model works out. I've never played under such circumstances. I'm always dashing back to the change machine for more quarters or tokens.

I can't wait for my son to come up for the summer and invade all the local arcades with me. Free-play isn't something either of us have experienced. Unlimited Joust? All day Tempest? Asteroids Deluxe late into the night? I can't fathom the potential awesomeness.

When I was a kid, I loved the arcade ports for the Atari 2600. I knew they were nowhere near as good as the arcade games, but I loved being able to play at home. So, with free-play at Wackenhammer's... it's going to let us play endless retro arcade games from dawn to dusk. This summer is looking up!
