Sprinkled with everything I love about the 1980s, Cline's book will resonate with anyone who loves pop culture, video games and music from that era. It's hard to put this book down as you follow Wade Watts through an online game in which he seeks an undiscovered treasure. the lead character, Wade, is quite obsessed with that decade as he fights to stay sane in a dismal world only lit up when immersed in his Virtual Reality set up..
Will people in 204os still still have a fondness for the 1980s? I hope so. As the decades progress, I always go back to the 80s for a timeframe that never ceases to inspire and delight me. From pop culture to world events - it was an amazing time to be alive.
The book weaves the depressing lives of those who survive the post apocalyptic world, yet leave it behind as VR enables them to enter The Oasis. It's a virtual utopia where the present world is left behind and re-imagined.
In a classic good vs. evil scenario, Wade and his friends work to unlock puzzles within Oasis, left by it's founder and creator. knowledge of the era, the 80s, is imperative to solving the riddles and puzzles that lead to power and fortune.
But the virtual world holds great threats that players endure and battle in an effort to be the first to unlock the final puzzle of The Oasis. From classic video games to TV series and films of the 80's Cline manages to wind them deftly into his story. His novel will bring back fond memories and things you'd long forgotten, but enable Wade Watts to move ever closer to his goal.
